Traveler & Pilgrim FAQ
Nestled where the Arno and Sieve rivers meet, Pontassieve is the historic end of Stage 1 of the Via di Francesco. Since 1994, we've welcomed pilgrims, travelers, and explorers with warmth, comfort, and deep respect for this sacred path.
🥾 Via di Francesco – The Way of St. Francis
Can I start or continue the Via di Francesco from Pontassieve?
Yes! Pontassieve (historically Castel Sant'Angelo) is the official end of Stage 1 on the Via di Francesco pilgrimage route—from Florence's Piazza Santa Croce to the Mediceo Bridge over the Sieve River. After years of advocacy, this vital segment remains part of the official Tuscan pilgrim route.
From here, most pilgrims continue toward Consuma, Vallombrosa, or La Verna—the sanctuary where St. Francis received the stigmata.
How hard is the Pontassieve to Consuma stage?
This stage is moderately challenging—about 14–16 km with significant elevation gain (600+ meters). It climbs through olive groves, chestnut forests, and historic mule tracks. Good footwear and 1.5 liters of water are recommended.
Are the trails well marked?
Most of the route is well-signposted with standard Tuscan pilgrim markers (yellow arrows, "Cammino di Francesco" signs). However, we strongly recommend downloading offline GPX tracks or using apps like ViewRanger or Komoot—just ask us, and we'll share our verified route!
Can I do a short pilgrim walk from Pontassieve?
Absolutely! A gentle day walk: Pontassieve → Sieci → Pieve di San Giovanni Battista (935 AD) → return (6–7 km round trip). It follows the Arno River, passes ancient churches, and offers peaceful Tuscan views—perfect for reflection or a light hike.
Where can I get a pilgrim credential in Pontassieve?
The official pilgrim credential must be collected in person at the Chiesa di San Giacomo (Via Bernardo Rucellai 9, Florence) during parish office hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00-13:00, or Sunday before/after the 11:00 mass. We can help you plan your visit to Florence to collect it before starting your pilgrimage.
